How to Re-Light Your Water Heater Pilot Light

If you have a conventional gas-powered water heater, you probably know that the pilot light provides the initial source of ignition. The small flame, located at the bottom of the heater near the burner assembly, lights the gas coming out of the burner to provide heat. If the pilot light goes out, there won’t be a source of ignition, meaning there won’t be a source of heat.

The pilot light can go out due to a blocked air vent, gas supply issues, and many other reasons. Before you call an expert for water heater repair, it’s advisable to try and re-light the pilot light yourself. It is a fairly simple process that doesn’t require specialized knowledge. However, keep in mind that gas is highly flammable; hence, you should proceed with extra caution when relighting a pilot light. If you’re not comfortable with the process, you can seek help from a qualified plumber. Let’s walk you through the steps to re-light a water pilot light.

Step 1: Access the Pilot Light

The pilot light is usually located at the bottom of the water heater, near the burner assembly. Remove the cover to access the pilot light, though some models may not have a cover. You may need to use a flashlight if your water heater is installed in an area without a lot of light.

Step 2: Turn Off the Gas

Locate the gas shut-off valve near the water heater and turn it to the “off” position. Let the unit sit for at least 10 minutes to allow the thermocouple to cool off and ensure there’s no residual gas in the line. This is an important safety measure that helps prevent accidental explosions that would occur if there’s residual gas in the line.

Step 3: Set the Control Knob to Pilot

Turn the gas valve to the “pilot” setting and hold it down. The knob should move in about a quarter of an inch. This step will release gas, allowing you to light the flame. Keep holding the gas knob down and press the igniter button until you see a flame appear. If your model does not have an igniter button, you’ll have to manually light the flame using a long match or lighter.

Step 4: Hold the Knob until the Indicator Light Blinks

Once the flame ignites, continue to hold the gas knob for 30 seconds and release it slowly. Monitor the pilot light to ensure it stays lit even after you release the control knob. Turn the gas knob to the “ON” position and set the thermostat to the desired temperature.

These are the simple steps you need to follow to re-light your water heater pilot light. If the light won’t stay lit, call a nearby plumbing repair service to check the water heater and make the necessary repairs. There could be a deeper issue that needs to be fixed by a professional. Here at Sunshine Plumbers, we have the knowledge and tools to troubleshoot the unit and offer a reliable solution.
