NOTE: Do Not Force Flush

Before we get to fixing the issue, let’s contain the situation. Do NOT force flush the toilet. This will only make matters worse. In fact, you should turn off the water to the toilet to prevent more water from flooding the toilet bowl. Further, grab a bowl or bucket to remove water from the toilet. This will prevent splashing when you move onto the next steps.

Using a Plunger

The first thought that comes to mind is probably the plunger. It’s simple enough, but there are some techniques to consider. First, remember to lower the plunger slowly and at an angle to free air bubbles from it. Then, press down firmly to push against the blockage. After some attempts, you should feel the blockage open up and the water level in the toilet bowl go down.

Using a Drain Snake

The drain snake is a common method for two reasons. It is easy to use and you can even make a makeshift one if you need. Simply unravel a metal clothes hanger and attach cloth to the ends; use tape to hold the cloth down.

Slowly insert the end of the drain snake into the toilet bowl and send it down the line. You will feel the drain snake hit an obstacle. This is when you twist and push to get the drain snake through the obstruction. When you feel the drain snake get past the blockage, twist and pull back to bring the debris out. Repeat until the blockage is sufficiently cleared up.

Professional Drain Cleaning

The drawback of the previous two methods is that you cannot see what is going on in the drains. Further, drain snakes and plungers only clear a small portion of the blockage and they are not very effective for deep clogs.

The professional way to fix overflow toilet involves video technology and pressurized water or an advanced auger. Professional drain cleaning offers safe and thoroughly cleaning for long-lasting results.

What About Damaged Toilets?

Sometimes an overflowing toilet is a symptom of damage – not just a blockage. In these cases, plungers and drain snakes are not much use. If the toilet is damaged, then arrange toilet repair as soon as possible. Call Sunshine Plumbers to schedule an appointment or request an urgent dispatch today.
